Artist Statement
Experiences, both good and bad are what shape our lives. The
best advice I have ever received, was from friend who told me; “Mistakes and
bad things will happen throughout life however, if you chose to learn and grow
from them you will be able to turn a negative situation into a positive one.”
My work is a reflection of that notion. Without the ugly the
beautiful cannot be appreciated, without sadness, happiness cannot fully be
achieved.
When constructing a work, I first consider elements that
are visually appealing to the eye, such as, organic shapes, soft lines and a
since of symmetry. I then try to add some darkness or mystery, by inserting an
element that may not directly fit,
incorporating it in a way that forces the viewer to accept it and
appreciate it. I want my work to attract many viewers and then upon further
inspection, for the viewer to be placed out of their comfort zone or notice
a component they were not expecting. To achieve this, I have used elements of
grotesqueness and unanticipated elements within.
Currently I am striving to introduce more individuality into
my work. While continuing to experiment with the push and pull betweeen awkward and comfortable relationships
of forms and figures, and would like to push this concept even further in
upcoming projects. I would also like to create a stronger since of presence in
my pieces weather through volume and size, or the statement that the work impresses
upon the viewer.
